Qynergy Corporation AWARDED $3.1 million contract from
Air Force Research LaboratorY FOR NEW ENERGY TECHNOLOGY
This
contract will allow Qynergy to use proprietary semiconductor
technology licensed from Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico to develop new power solutions for the
Air Force.
Albuquerque, NM – Qynergy Corporation will continue to develop advanced
energy solutions under a $3.1 million contract with the Space
Vehicle Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL/VS),
Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. This
contract will allow Qynergy to apply advanced semiconductor material
technology that Qynergy licensed from Sandia National Laboratories
and the University of New Mexico for use in energy cells. These energy cells use the radiation-resistant
semiconductor material in a “direct conversion concept”, that
is to directly convert the energy of beta particles (electrons)
into electricity. Qynergy has built prototype hardware that proves
the direct conversion concept to be effective. Qynergy will use
the AFRL funding to develop higher efficiency beta energy cells
specifically designed to address Air Force power needs for smaller
energy cells that last up to 10 and even 20 years.
“We are extremely
excited to have this opportunity to develop a new generation
of advanced power system solutions, which offer the promise of
a wide range of military and commercial applications. We
are looking forward to teaming with the Air Force Research Laboratory
as we take our next steps forward in creating products from this
home-grown technology for national and international markets. This
is truly a win-win for all of our stakeholders…employees, shareholders
and the broader New Mexico based technology transfer community…as
we drive to commercialize this revolutionary technology”, says
Paul Shirley, Chairman of Qynergy.
According to Mike Hollis, President of Qynergy Corporation, “This
contract provides an exciting opportunity to develop compact,
long life power solutions to enable numerous defense, intelligence
and medical applications. Our high energy density beta energy
cells offer the ideal power source for many current and emerging
products, such as the new generation of micro and nano scale
sensors and devices.”
Rep. Heather Wilson (NM-01) has not only
supported small businesses and start ups in New Mexico, but has
been an active advocate for efforts that support Technology Transfer & Commercialization
from research institutions such as the Dept. of Energy National
Laboratories, Air Force Research Laboratories, and our
state's universities.
"Qynergy is an example of a company
that is working to leverage the state's valuable federal and
state resources, bringing investment dollars into the state,
and creating new jobs for New Mexicans," says Wilson.
Several large
commercial companies and other government agencies are looking
forward to the outcomes of the work performed during this contract.
Some have already contracted with Qynergy to leverage the AFRL/
VS work and produce specialized prototypes. The contract has
two options for additional or continued technology development
work with AFRL/VS.
The Qynergy Corporation, based in Albuquerque, NM, is a high
technology company with core strengths in advanced semiconductor
materials, energy systems and microelectronics. For
